London Irish announces plans for a special celebration in May 2014.

A unique “double header” of matches featuring the London Irish amateur and professional teams will be the highlight of a special celebration as the Exiles say a final “Farewell to The Avenue” in May next year.

The grounds at The Avenue, Sunbury on Thames, have been home to the London Irish family since 1934 - 79 years of extraordinary change for the game of rugby and for the Club.

The celebration which will take place on Saturday 17th May 2014, will also include a lunch and a post-rugby party featuring the Bible Code Sundays.

The highlight of the celebration will be the back-to-back matches. The first will kick-off at 2.30pm between the London Irish Wild Geese and an Invitation XV. The second will kick-off at 4.45pm between a London Irish Legends team (to be selected and managed by Michael Gibson) and a Topsy Ojo/Declan Danaher XV (to be selected and managed by Bob Casey). During the half-time intervals of both matches, the Club’s talented mini-rugby players will show off their skills.

The occasion coincides with Topsy Ojo’s Testimonial Year and also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional service of another special player, Declan Danaher.

The beneficiaries of the celebration will include the London Irish Amateur Club, the London Irish Academy and the charities associated with the Topsy Ojo Testimonial Year.

There will be a pre-rugby reception and lunch in a special marquee in the grounds. A maximum of 25 tables of 10 will be available at £1,000 each (plus VAT).

Appropriately, the afternoon will finish with an open air party on the main pitch featuring Ronan McManus and the Bible Code Sundays who have been an integral part of the “Craic” at Sunbury for many years.

The club would like to mount an exhibition of photographs and other memorabilia of the Sunbury era at the event, anyone who would like to donate or loan images or items for display should contact Paddy Lennon at mail@patricklennon.com

Admission to the celebration will be by a special souvenir programme for which supporters will be asked to make a donation.

Further details of the celebration will be announced in January. In the meantime, supporters should make a note of the date. Those interested in taking a table at the lunch should contact Dominie at Mint Management: dominie@minteventmanagement.co.uk
